Got my a$$ kicked by a 7-hour craniotomy that ended early last night. Poor fellow with a huge, nonmalignant brain tumor that was causing trouble by compressing important nearby structures. Got it all out, but there were some dicey moments before we got him to the recovery room, awake and moving all of his arms and legs. Barring complications, his outlook is good.
I had a 25-minute drive home, which was enough time for some of the stress to leach out of me. I was dead tired by the time I got there. Canned soup was all I could manage.
Those cases are challenging, and the older I get, the more they take out of me. Just happy for the patient it turned out OK.
